Jazz made in Germany is globally appreciated and more than ever at the cutting edge of our time: its players live and convey cultural diversity on stage and in teaching, in cultural management as well as in record production. Artists in jazz and improvised music are highly mobile, forming networks, developing new concepts and formats for performance, recording and distribution. In order to honour this power of innovation in all its facets, Prof. Monika Grütters, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), has initiated Deutscher Jazzpreis. As the German government’s central music funding institution, the Initiative Musik has been entrusted with the realisation.

The first edition of Deutscher Jazzpreis will take place in June 2021 with the mission of establishing itself as an annually recurring cultural event. The award concept was developed with a specially appointed advisory committee consisting of leading representatives of the jazz scene.

Drawing attention to the german jazz scene at home and abroad

Deutscher Jazzpreis shines the spotlight on the diversity and creativity of the German jazz scene and honours exceptional, artistic and innovative achievements in a national and international context with prizes in 31 categories. The winners are awarded a trophy and prize money of €10,000.

»This award will help us shine a well-deserved spotlight on the variety, creativity and communicative power of jazz and honour outstanding artistic achievements with prize monies. The jazz music scene has always been building sonic bridges between various cultures, represents courage, exchange, cooperation – and is therefore also a reflection of our pluralistic society. This is precisely the sort of cosmopolitanism that we want to continue supporting in the future.«
Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media
