Marshall Allen gehört zu den markantesten Stimmen im Jazz. Sein wandlungsfähiges Altsaxophon prägt den Klang des Sun Ra Arkestra seit 1958. Der am 25.05.1924 in Louisville, Kentucky geborene NEA Jazz Master (2025) verkörpert die Musik, die man inzwischen auch als Amerikas Klassische Musik würdigt, wie kein anderer. Er hat alle Epochen des Jazz seit den 1940er Jahren aktiv mitgestaltet und sein eloquenter Ton entfaltet bis heute seine Strahlkraft und Ausdrucksstärke.

Aufgenommen am 16.06 2024 im Studio A der New Yorker Power Station, zelebriert der damals 100-jährige Marshall Allen mit einem weiteren Meilenstein seine Meisterschaft als Multiinstrumentalist, Arrangeur, Bandleader, Lehrer und Bewahrer von Sun Ras Erbe mit einem 24-köpfigen Arkestra auf dem Album „Lights on a Satellite“. Er leitet das Arkestra seit 1993 und bis heute immer noch auf allen Konzerten an der Ostküste der USA. Nur Interkontinentalflüge mutet sich der mittlerweile 101 Jahre alte Meister nicht mehr zu.

He has actively contributed to every era of jazz since the 1940s, and his eloquent tone continues to radiate brilliance and expressive power to this day.

Recorded on June 16, 2024, at Studio A of New York’s Power Station, the then 100-year-old Marshall Allen celebrates another milestone in his masterful career as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, bandleader, teacher, and guardian of Sun Ra’s legacy. The album “Lights on a Satellite” features a 24-piece Arkestra and is a testament to his enduring artistry. Since 1993, he has led the Arkestra and continues to do so at all East Coast concerts in the U.S. The now 101-year-old master only refrains from intercontinental flights.
