Das 36. Internationale Jazzfestival Viersen präsentierte sich mit einem vielseitigen Programm an 3 Tagen auf 3 Bühnen rund um die Festhalle sowie mit einer Matinée in der Kreuzkirche. Unter dem Motto „Young & Fresh“ zog sich die Trompete mit unterschiedlichen Klangfarben wie ein roter Faden durch das Festivalwochenende. Die Hauptbühne befindet sich in der Festhalle mit einer Kapazität von rund 1.500 bei Teilbestuhlung und Stehplätzen. Die diesjährige Artist-in-Residence lud verschiedene Musiker*innen als Gäste ein, um den Ernst-Klusen-Saal mit einer Kapazität von rund 100 Plätzen in intimer Atmosphäre mit 3 verschiedenen Formationen zu bespielen. Die Gewinnerbands des Nachwuchswettbewerbs „Jazzband Challenge“ bekamen eine Bühne im Lyzeumsgarten hinter der Festhalle – Open-Air und bei freiem Eintritt. Der Festivalsonntag stand im Zeichen für Kinder und Jugendliche mit dem „Junior´s Jazz Open“. Von Jazz für Puristen über Improvisationsformate bis zu Crossover ist es ein offenes Festival.

The 36th International Jazz Festival Viersen showcased a diverse program over three days on three stages around the Festhalle, as well as a matinee in the Kreuzkirche. Under the theme “Young & Fresh,” the trumpet, with its various timbres, served as a common thread throughout the festival weekend. The main stage was located in the Festhalle, which has a capacity of about 1,500 with partial seating and standing areas. This year’s Artist-in-Residence invited various musicians as guests to fill the Ernst-Klusen-Saal, with a capacity of about 100 seats, with an intimate atmosphere across three different formations. The winning bands of the newcomer competition “Jazzband Challenge” were given a stage in the Lyzeumsgarten behind the Festhalle – open-air and with free admission. The festival Sunday was dedicated to children and young people with the “Junior´s Jazz Open.” From jazz for purists, improvisation formats, to crossover, it is an open festival.

Von 12. bis 14.5.23 wurde der Kulturpark am Schlachthof Wiesbaden zum Schauplatz eines neuen internationalen Musikfestivals. Insgesamt 18 Acts aus 13 Ländern gaben beim Magnet Festival einen umfangreichen Überblick über gegenwärtige Strömungen innovativer Musik, von experimentell bis populär. Im Spektrum von aktuellem Jazz bis hin zu elektronischer Musik sowie avantgardistischen Fusion-Projekten wurden aufstrebende und etablierte Musiker:innen dazu eingeladen, ihr Werk vorzustellen. In konventionellen Konzertsituationen bis hin zu ausgefallenen Performance-Settings und einer Clubnacht luden vielfältige Formate dazu ein, sich eingehend mit genreübergreifender, innovativer Musik zu beschäftigen: In Kesselhaus, Krea und der auf besondere Art inszenierten Skatehalle Wiesbaden gab es an den drei Tagen Solokonzerte, bestehende Ensembles, nie dagewesene Projekt-Gruppierungen, Listening Sessions und Gespräche mit den Artists sowie lockere Late Night Sessions und DJ-Sets.

From May 12 to May 14, 2023, the Kulturpark at the Schlachthof Wiesbaden became the scene of a new international music festival. A total of 18 acts from 13 countries gave a comprehensive overview of current trends in innovative music at the Magnet Festival, ranging from experimental to popular. The spectrum from contemporary jazz to electronic music and avant-garde fusion projects invited both emerging and established musicians to present their work. From conventional concert situations to unusual performance settings and a club night, various formats encouraged an in-depth engagement with cross-genre, innovative music: In the Kesselhaus, Krea, and the specially staged skate hall in Wiesbaden, there were solo concerts, existing ensembles, unprecedented project groupings, listening sessions and talks with the artists, as well as relaxed late-night sessions and DJ sets over the three days.

NUEJAZZ präsentiert seit vielen Jahren einige der aufregendsten neuen und auch etablierten Acts der gegenwärtigen internationalen Jazzszene. Dabei finden sich viele internationale Newcomer- Künstler*innen. Das Festival präsentiert den genreübergreifenden Reichtum des Jazz. Künstler*innen aus den Bereichen Rock, Pop, Elektro, HipHop, etc. sind ebenso im Programm, wie Künstler*innen traditioneller Spielarten des Jazz. Daneben gibt es genügend Raum für die Akteur*innen der lokalen Szene und vielseitige Angebote der Musikvermittlung für alle Generationen. NUEJAZZ steht für eine offene, pluralistische Gesellschaft. Jazz steht für Improvisation und ist somit stetig im Wandel. Diesen Wandel möchte das Festival abbilden. NUEJAZZ steht auch für Diversität und Nachhaltigkeit. Das Festival achtet in der Programmzusammenstellung auf möglichst große Vielfalt hinsichtlich Herkunft und Geschlecht und ist stetig bemüht, zusammen mit den Venues, ein möglichst »grünes« Festival zu organisieren.

For many years, NUEJAZZ has been presenting some of the most exciting new and established acts from the contemporary international jazz scene, including numerous international newcomer artists. The festival showcases the genre-crossing richness of jazz, featuring artists from rock, pop, electro, hip hop, and traditional jazz styles. In addition, it provides ample space for local scene actors and diverse music education offerings for all generations. NUEJAZZ stands for an open, pluralistic society. Jazz, synonymous with improvisation, is constantly evolving, and the festival aims to reflect this change. NUEJAZZ also represents diversity and sustainability. In its programming, the festival strives for a wide variety in terms of origin and gender and continuously works with the venues to organize a festival that is as “green” as possible.

Das Internationale Jazzfestival Sparks & Visions fand zum ersten Mal vom 27.-29.01.23 statt. Hauptanliegen des Festivals ist: Jazzfans ein hochwertiges und vielfältiges Programm mit der einen oder anderen Neuentdeckung zu bieten und Leuten, die bisher noch keinen Jazz hörten, zu zeigen, dass Jazz für jeden etwas bereithält, der sich für Musik und Menschen interessiert. Dieses Ziel wird durch das einladende ästhetische Setting im 220 Jahre alten Theater Regensburg erreicht und mithilfe einer stilistisch offenen Programmgestaltung, die sehr auf Kontraste und Dramaturgie aller drei Konzerte eines Abends setzt. Gründerin und Kuratorin Anastasia Wolkenstein betont den gesellschaftliche Stellenwert von Live-Musik, insbesondere des Jazz, und achtet auf Präsenz von Bandleader*innen mehrerer Geschlechter. Es kam zu einer Vielzahl an Ankündigungen und Nachbesprechungen im In- und Ausland. Sparks & Visions wurde von BR-Klassik mitgeschnitten und u.a. in einer vierstündigen Sondersendung am Samstag nach dem Festival von 18-22 Uhr präsentiert.

The International Jazz Festival Sparks & Visions was held for the first time from January 27 to 29, 2023. The main goal of the festival is to offer jazz fans a high-quality and diverse program, including some new discoveries, and to show people who have not yet listened to jazz that it has something to offer everyone interested in music and people. This goal is achieved through the inviting aesthetic setting in the 220-year-old Theater Regensburg, and with a stylistically open program design that focuses on contrasts and the dramaturgy of all three concerts each evening. Founder and curator Anastasia Wolkenstein emphasizes the social importance of live music, particularly jazz, and ensures the presence of bandleaders of multiple genders. The festival received numerous announcements and reviews both domestically and internationally. Sparks & Visions was recorded by BR-Klassik and featured in a four-hour special broadcast on the Saturday following the festival from 6-10 PM.
