Drei Jazzmusiker und 21 Sänger*innen führen in dieser Rundfunkproduktion die Verbindung von Jazz und Chormusik in eine neue Dimension. Der spanische Pianist und Komponist Daniel García hat dafür bedeutende Chorwerke der Renaissance und des späten Mittelalters adaptiert. Mit dem Bassisten Pablo Martín Caminero und dem Schlagzeuger Borja Barrueta traf García im Oktober 2025 auf das abenteuerlustige NDR Vokalensemble unter der Leitung von Justus Barleben. Gemeinsam erarbeiteten sie das Projekt „Beata Viscera“ und stellten das Ergebnis live im Rolf-Liebermann-Studio des NDR in einem Radiokonzert vor. Daniel García hat die vielstimmigen Werke – u.a. von Pérotin, William Byrd und Mateo Flecha – zum Teil neu harmonisiert, hat ihren Kern erhalten und sie zugleich ins Heute transportiert. Ziel war es, die Gemeinsamkeiten zu finden zwischen der Musik von vor 500 Jahren und dem, was beim Improvisieren erreicht werden kann. Das Ergebnis ist ein musikalischer „Hybrid“ im besten Sinne.

In this broadcast production, three jazz musicians and 21 singers take the connection between jazz and choral music to a new dimension. For this purpose, the Spanish pianist and composer Daniel García adapted significant choral works of the Renaissance and the late Middle Ages. In October 2025, together with bassist Pablo Martín Caminero and drummer Borja Barrueta, García met the adventurous NDR Vocal Ensemble conducted by Justus Barleben. Together they developed the project “Beata Viscera” and presented the result live in a radio concert at the NDR’s Rolf Liebermann Studio. Daniel García partly reharmonized the polyphonic works — including pieces by Pérotin, William Byrd, and Mateo Flecha — preserving their essence while transporting them into the present. The aim was to find common ground between music from 500 years ago and what can be achieved through improvisation. The result is a musical “hybrid” in the best sense.

In seiner Musik gießt der Schlagzeuger und Komponist Jonas Sorgenfrei das, was ihn bewegt – wie etwa die Zerreißprobe zwischen Wunsch und Wirklichkeit in einer Welt, die sich an einem Ort ganz friedlich und intakt zeigt, und doch schon ein kleines Stück entfernt komplett aus den Fugen sein kann – in Musik, die genau diesen Kontrast in sich trägt. Zusammen mit seiner großartigen Band bringt er sein Sujet in eine hochmusikalische, in sich äußerst bewegliche Balance. Auf seinen bisher fünf erschienenen Veröffentlichungen als Bandleader erweist sich der 1993 in der Oberpfalz geborene und jetzt in Nürnberg lebende Drummer dabei als Komponist, der auf harmonischer Ebene mit einer zauberischen, impressionistischen Klangfülle arbeitet und an seinem Instrument als Texturen-Weber. Und auch wenn Jonas Sorgenfrei majestätische Dickhäuter durch das Titelstück seiner Debüt-CD marschieren lässt, klingt es bei ihm doch so, als würden sie durch den Raum schweben und die Zeit träumen. -Beate Sampson

In his music, drummer and composer Jonas Sorgenfrei pours what moves him — such as the tension between desire and reality in a world that may appear peaceful and intact in one place, yet completely fall apart just a short distance away — into sounds that carry exactly this contrast within them. Together with his outstanding band, he brings his subject into a highly musical, remarkably fluid balance. Across his five releases to date as a bandleader, the drummer, born in 1993 in the Upper Palatinate and now living in Nuremberg, proves himself a composer who works with a magical, impressionistic richness of harmony and, on his instrument, as a weaver of textures. And even when Jonas Sorgenfrei lets majestic pachyderms march through the title piece of his debut CD, it still sounds as if they were floating through space and dreaming time. — Beate Sampson

Luise Volkmann ist eine in Köln ansässige Musikerin im Spannungsfeld von Jazz und verschiedener aktueller Musik. Die Saxophonistin spielte in den letzten 10 Jahren in Clubs und Festivals in Europa, Süd- und Ostasien sowie Brasilien. Sie interessiert sich für das transformierende Potential von Live-Musik und hat dazu mit verschiedenen großen und kleinen Formationen Projekte umgesetzt. Ihre Alben wurden unter anderem von der Wochenzeitschrift Die Zeit, Bandcamp und dem Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland unter die besten Alben der Jahre 2018 und 2021 gewählt. 2022 und 2025 war sie als Komponistin und Saxophonistin für den Deutschen Jazzpreis nominiert. Als Komponistin arbeitete sie mit Neue-Musik-Ensembles wie Ensemble Reflektor, Ensemble Musikfabrik und machine à trois zusammen. Ihre Stücke wurden u.a. bei Edition Leduc und Edition Peters publiziert. Ihr Studium in den Fächern Jazz-Saxophon, Komposition und Musikwissenschaft absolvierte sie in Leipzig, Paris und Köln.

Luise Volkmann is a Cologne-based musician working at the intersection of jazz and various forms of contemporary music. Over the past 10 years, the saxophonist has performed in clubs and festivals across Europe, South and East Asia, as well as Brazil. She is interested in the transformative potential of live music and has realized projects with various large and small ensembles. Her albums were selected among the best albums of 2018 and 2021 by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Bandcamp, and the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. In 2022 and 2025 she was nominated for the German Jazz Prize as both composer and saxophonist. As a composer she has worked with contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble Reflektor, Ensemble Musikfabrik and machine à trois. Her pieces have been published by Edition Leduc and Edition Peters, among others. She studied jazz saxophone, composition and musicology in Leipzig, Paris and Cologne.

Seit gut 10 Jahren arbeitet der Kölner Kontrabassist Stefan Schönegg mit seinem Projekt „Enso“ an minimalistischer Musik in verschiedenen Besetzungen. „On the withered tree a flower blooms“ ist Dronemusik: eine langsame, subtile Schichtung mäandernder Texturen. Handelte das vergangene Album „A Simplified Space“ (im Vorjahr nominiert für Rundfunkproduktion des Jahres) vor allem von Stille und dem spontanen Ausdruck des Augenblicks, so lädt „On the withered tree a flower blooms“ auf andere Weise ein, in den Moment einzutauchen: Durch feinste rhythmische und harmonische Verästelungen entwickelt die Musik einen unmittelbaren Sog hinein in ihre Essenz – den Klang. Aufgenommen im Kammermusiksaal des Deutschlandfunks in Köln, fungiert dessen atemberaubende Akustik wie ein weiterer Mitspieler des Ensembles. „Das ist musikalische Dialektik in improvisatorischer Hochform. For over 10 years, Cologne-based double bassist Stefan Schönegg has been working with his project “Enso” on minimalist music in various lineups. “On the withered tree a flower blooms” is drone music: a slow, subtle layering of meandering textures. While the previous album “A Simplified Space” (nominated the year before for Radio Production of the Year) dealt primarily with silence and the spontaneous expression of the moment, “On the withered tree a flower blooms” invites the listener to immerse themselves in the present in another way: through the finest rhythmic and harmonic branching, the music develops an immediate pull into its essence — sound. Recorded in the chamber music hall of Deutschlandfunk in Cologne, its breathtaking acoustics function like another member of the ensemble. “This is musical dialectics in improvisational peak form.
