KOMPOSITION DES JAHRES - 2023
Christian Achim Kühn - Tantalos

DE

The composition „Tantalos“ by Christian Achim Kühn is an impressive and haunting piece of music, which is at first slow and unobtrusive, only to suddenly unfold in full glory. The brass unison opens a radiant element in the often somber music. The composer knows how to incorporate modern elements into his music and has an almost Zappa-like approach. His music is technically proficient, challenging and demanding of the listener. „Tantalos“ is often associated with pain and despair, but the composer sees it as a metaphor for a dedicated musician’s aspiration to find the perfect composition and ensemble.

Diego Pinera - Through Hell

DE

The composition „Through Hell“ by Diego Pinera is overall cleverly conceived and provided with an exciting instrumentation, which furthermore stands out with a skillful use of electronics. The composition brings together different musical elements, styles and timbres and convinces with the combination of electronic sound elements, crackling percussion sounds and string quartet. It maintains the sound of a modern jazz quartet while cultivating the tradition of a classical string quartet. The influence of Latin American musical traditions, such as the clave tradition and the preference for odd meters, creates a completely new and unique ensemble sound.

Heidi Bayer - Cookie Dough

DE

The composition „Cookie Dough“ by Heidi Bayer combines musical humor with high technical skill. The composition builds and develops tension by having an initial motif recur in different contexts and juxtapositions. The use of the accordion as a percussive element of the composition, its tone bendings and sound collages give the work a very special character. This in combination with bass clarinet and trumpet creates a fascinating and varied soundscape in which the tempo, the groove and the abundance of compositional and improvisational elements become increasingly dense.
